How do you display a .pdf file without having to create a link?

Question: I want to create a feature that is a 1 column page. In that page I would like a .pdf page to display without having to link to it from another text block.

I tried using the Embedded page feature but if that is what I need to use, I did not get it figured out correctly. I've searched help and have not found the answer.

Answer by Matt Rosen: This is actually a great question, and I'm surprised no one has asked it before. After doing some googling I did find some HTML that will allow you to embed a .pdf document into a text block so it displays within the page.

I will have to add a widget, or button in the text editor to allow you to do this yourself, but until then if you want to send me an email with the pdf and a link to the page you want it put in I should be able to add it for you.

Question: What if I wanted to invite one thousand people into the site... how would I invite them in?

Answer by CH Low: Is the list is in a spreadsheet or document, you can usually copy and paste the list as long as they are on individual lines.

Else we can help you load them up if you send us the file.

You do that simply on your computer viewer applications - In Windows, the IE explorer, when you view photos in thumbnails, it will let you rotate the images. Mac is even easier.

Answer by Matt Rosen: You have to rotate it on your computer before you upload it to the site. You can rotate an image in many programs including Windows Photo Gallery which is the default image viewer in Windows.

Google Analytics

Question: I signed up for Google Analytics and have saved my Tracking Number in my WCGN website. The instructions say, "Copy the following code block into every webpage you want to track immediately before the tag."

I do not know how to access the HTML for a page in an Orbius website, only for a text block.

I know you can do a right-click to see the source but I'm not sure that one can save from there.

Do you have any help or hints on this question?

Answer by Matt Rosen: The Orbius system takes care of putting the google analytics code block in the appropriate place on each page in your community when you enter your tracking number, so you're all set. You should start to see results in your google analytics account in a few days.

How do you find other Orbius members not in one of my communities?

Document Management

Question: Is there a way to upload and manage documents or files to an Orbius community - office docs, files, etc?

Answer by Matt Rosen: You can add a file repository page to a library, but it's a feature we need to enable for your community right now. We don't want to allow anyone to be able to upload files at the moment because of potential security issues. You can also upload files or documents to the ContentSpace area under the community management menu.

The file repository and ContentSpace features are ones that we plan to enhance significantly in the near future too.

Wiki - linking to other entries.

Question: Can I provide a link within a Wiki entry to another Wiki entry? (similar to wikipedia)

Answer by CH Low: Yep.

One of the tools under resources in the text editor is the Hyperlink Manager (has pictures of chain link).

Select a phrase and then click on the Manager. It will pop up a window to specify URl and other characteristics of the klink.

CH: We added a Google Translate gadget to the prototype orb we built. We did it as you suggested, by embedding the scripting code in a text app. It worked on some pages, but not on all. This is a pretty handy widget for this prospect. What are the terms and cost of the License? Will this ensure the gadget works everywhere?

Found it. I didn't know 'Manage Community' was a menu option. I thought that was the name of the menu. Once I clicked on it, it was very clear. Thanks.

Community Invitations

Question: I set up a community where its invitation only. How can I change it to let people request to join?

Answer by Matt Rosen: Click on the 'Manage Community' link in your member toolbox and towards the bottom of the page you'll see 'Privacy Settings'. On the privacy settings page you'll be able to change the enrollment to be by request.

Blog - Comments Section

Question: I'm looking at the blog page and its not clear how to comment.

I figured it out after a while that I need to click on the title of the post and then I can comment. But the comments don't show up on the front page of the blog. its pretty confusing. Shouldn't we follow a clearer design.

Answer by CH Low: In a typical Blog design (e.g Wordpress) Comments generally are not shown on the "Home" page of a Blog which is a list of the blog post.

The number of comments on each blog post should be shown though.

Most of the time you click to a blog is a link to a blog post - similar to clicking on a post like us.

Receiving the invite email

Question: It looks like a lot of people that I sent invites out to never received the email. Have you been seeing this problem? Maybe its getting caught up in their spam filter. I know this happens for Yahoo mail accounts.

Have you seen this problem and is there a remedy?

Answer by CH Low: We have seen this in a few cases - about 5-10% for many fresh list of emails.

Right now we don't know of any workaround for this. If there is a way, Spammers would use it.

We follow all the proper protocol to avoid being overtly blocked.

We'll keep looking into this to see if there is anything else to do.

Thanks for adding the picture. How did you do it? btw, I LOVE this platform! I've set up 3 communities and am getting the hang of it. The power here is unbelievable. My daughter wanted her own page in one of the websites. I added the page and they gave her complete control over that page through permissions. Wow.

How do you delete a topic in a wiki?

Question: I added a topic under the wrong heading and want to delete it but can't find a way to do it. Can you give some guidance?

Answer by CH Low: Click on the Topic first.

In the middle column, there will be a set of action buttons you can perform on the Wiki Topic - Edit, DELETE, Lock, Feature/Unfeature, Enable/Disable Comments.

At this time, our Wiki tool is still in beta. The UI is being refined before we officially release the tool.

How do I change my orb icon?

How do I add an image to a page?

Question: I can't figure out how to add one of my photos to the orb home page. The only place i dan see to add images is in a photo section.

Answer by CH Low: Images can be added into a text Block.

Under the Resources section of the text editor tool, there is a button for Image Manager (it has a picture of a mountain).

Click on that, it will allow you to upload an image.

Google gadgets

Question: How do I add a google gadget to my orb?

Answer by CH Low: Currently, Items like Google gadgets are not directly supported by Orbius.

However, these can be enabled by incorporating their "scripting code" into the text block. But for security reasons, "Scripting" is only enabled for valid licensees of the Orbius Application Service. Scripting is not allowed for FREE or TRIAL versions.

John & Matt: The problem is a delay issue. I experienced this recently. If you update the image, it takes a few minutes to register with the system for some strange reason. I had the same situation. I updated it 3 times, then it was there. Then I realize I just had to be more patient. The system should update immediately, or warn the user that the update will take a few mintutes. Daniel

changing profile or group image

When I want to change my photo on my profile page nothing happens... the same holds true for the "golf" group... I go to manage group ... go to browse... find image click and hit save...but Orbius "orb" is still there

HelpThe golf group in the oak grove high school community has a custom picture and not the orbius orb picture so it appears that your change was successful. It is possible that the old picture was still cached in your web browser, so if this happens again try pressing CTRL + F5 to refresh the page and clear the cache and then you should see the new picture.
